Ages 7+
We are Metropolis of Boston Dance Group, a team of passionate dancers who love to express themselves through the art of dance. Our group was founded in 1989 and since then, we have been performing at various events and shows, both locally and internationally.
To promote Greek Folk Dance in its authentic form, accompanied by music recorded using the original instruments of the region being studied.
Cultural information relating to the history, mythology, costumes, and traditions of the various mainland and island regions is also studied.
There are three progressive levels and one senior (advanced) level. Each class begins with rhythmic games and exercises in movement and posture. It is expected for children to complete a minimum of two (2) years at each level before advancing to the next level but this decision is ultimately at the discretion of the instructor as to whether or not the child can advance.
Level One
Students will develop a strong foundation in the movements and rhythms common in Greek Folk Dance and learn basic dances.
Level Two
Students will build on the foundation developed in Level One and will know how to dance all the pan-Hellenic dances such as kalamatiano, tsamiko, karagouna, and syrto.
Level Three
Level Three dancers focus on complex dance arrangements and variations. They also learn the popular dances hassapiko and hassaposerviko, and various antikristoi.
Senior Level (Advanced)
This is the performing group of the troupe taught by John Pappas. This is the group that represents the MYDG at various official events.
Students advance to the next level when the objectives of each level are met. Advancement is not based on age or grade in school. Half the program each year is dedicated to the teaching of dances from the mainland and the remainder of the program is dedicated to dances from the islands. We conclude the year by presenting a project which relates to aspects of cultural information from the region that was studied.
